Journey through Southern Africa from its wild plains to its winding rivers on a true safari adventure by land and water. From the powerful Victoria Falls to the calm waters of Lake Kariba and the plains across southern Africa’s stunning parks – get ready for a true safari adventure.
You’re ready to seize the day, whatever it may bring. You lead an active life at home (walking, biking, and half or full day hikes are things you may enjoy) and 10,000 steps a day is normal for you. You can handle longer walking tours (more than 3 hours covering 3+ miles at a steady clip) and activities that involve traversing uneven terrain, steep slopes, standing for periods of time, and varying altitudes and temperatures. You don’t mind being on the go with some early starts, late-nights, and full days. You can handle altitudes of 9,000 feet or higher with little to no issue. This level is not appropriate for travelers who use wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility assistance devices.
You’re a leisurely traveler. You typically take it easy and discover the energy of a new place by people-watching or soaking in the atmosphere at a local café. You can climb at least one flight of stairs, board a coach, and walk unassisted at a relaxed pace for up to 60 minutes without difficulty. You can easily handle altitudes up to 5,000 feet.
You like a balanced approach to travel. Walking two to three miles over the course of a day is no problem for you. You can partake in a two-hour leisurely walking tour, covering up to two miles (with included breaks). You can handle a variety of terrains, from cobblestone streets to moderate hills with relative ease and without assistance. You can climb two flights of stairs with ease. There may be 1 to 2 days on this tour when walking tours can cover 3 to 4 miles over uneven terrain. You can handle altitudes up to 6,000 feet.
You don’t want to miss a thing, so walking and standing for longer periods of time (2-3 hours) isn’t a big deal. A moderately paced two-and-a-half-hour walking tour, covering several miles, hills, and uneven surfaces, is no problem for you. Walking four miles over the course of a day is very doable, as is climbing into and out of various modes of transportation (tuk-tuk, cable car, zodiac, etc.). You can climb three flights of stairs easily and handle altitudes between 6,000 and 9,000 feet. Expect some longer days balanced with free time to recharge or set out on your own adventure. This level is not a fit for travelers who require mobility assistance devices.

You’re in for a treat as you sample the truly unique flavors of Africa. From chicken stew, peanut butter, cornbread and for the adventurous – Mopane worms; the variety of flavors and textures is surprising.
Zimbabwe is known for its rich and diverse culinary traditions, which you’ll experience firsthand when you visit on safari. A staple of Zimbabwean cuisine is sadza, a thick maize (corn) porridge often served with meat stews, vegetables, or flavorful sauces. Dishes like dovi, a hearty peanut butter stew typically made with chicken, and kapenta, small sardine-like fish, showcase the resourcefulness and rich flavors of the local cuisine. You might also encounter mopane worms, a delicacy for the adventurous, often cooked in a tomato-based sauce. Botswana is known for its hearty and flavorful cuisine, which reflects the country’s rich cultural heritage. In some destinations, gift shops may be integrated into the itinerary, offering curated items that reflect local craftsmanship and traditions.
Each region has its own shopping style. In markets and bazaars, bargaining is often expected and part of the cultural experience. Sellers may be very assertive in their approach, which can feel surprising if you’re not prepared If you choose to negotiate, do so respectfully and only if you intend to buy. In other areas, prices are fixed and haggling is not appropriate. Your tour manager can provide guidance on what to expect before visiting any of these markets.
When shopping, consider what the region is known for—whether it’s textiles, ceramics, spices, jewelry, or artwork. Be cautious with items that may be mass-produced or misrepresented as handmade. If authenticity matters to you, ask your Tour Manager or local guide for advice.
In this region, you’ll find a plethora of cultural products like carvings of animals made of soap stone, ebony, or other woods; wooden masks, bowls, jewelry and chess sets; jewelry made of precious stones like diamonds and semi-precious stones such as malachite, tanzanite, lapis and topaz; native art paintings, murals and sculptures; safari clothing; and tie-dyed prints of animals.

Due to varied flight schedules and arrival times of our travelers, there aren’t any scheduled activities on your first day of this tour.
The highest elevation encountered on this tour is 6,000 feet/1,829 meters in Johannesburg.
Our tours are non-smoking throughout: This includes all transportation exclusively provided by Collette, dining venues, and any other designated non-smoking areas on tour. Smoking of any kind including traditional tobacco products, e-cigarettes, e-cigars, vaporizers, and any other smoking devices—is strictly prohibited during group travel.
Hotel policies: Most hotels worldwide are entirely non-smoking, including guest rooms and public areas. Smoking rooms are generally no longer offered, and we cannot accommodate requests for them.
Local laws and regulations: Smoking laws vary widely by country and region. Travelers are responsible for understanding and complying with local regulations during their free time. Your Tour Manager may be able to assist in identifying permitted smoking areas when available.
Included in your tour documents bundle is your personalized name tag. We ask that you put this on before your first gathered event and wear it throughout your tour. This helps your fellow travelers get to know you and for your Tour Manager to better identify you in large groups.
Get ready – you’re in for an adventure! As you look ahead to your tour, you’ll probably have some questions. Our team of travel experts assembled this booklet packed with answers so you can feel ready for your upcoming journey. Before you go, take time to review and get familiar with what to expect throughout your tour and keep this information on hand during your travels.

If you booked flights with Collette:

If you booked your own flights:
You can add round-trip airport transfers on standard tour dates for $75 per person, each way. Some tours include transfers based on the itinerary.
Please provide your flight information at least 60 days before departure and notify your travel professional or Collette immediately if your flights change so we can confirm your transfers.
Please note for All Travelers with Transfers:
Meeting locations and times will be set up to accommodate your transfer arrival and departure schedules, which will be provided to you in your document’s packets.
Transfers operate at scheduled times and are not private.
IMPORTANT FOR THOSE THAT DON’T PURCHASE TRANSFERS:
If you decide to arrange your own transportation to the hotel, please check upon arrival at the hotel for a note from Airport Ushers regarding your transfer time the next morning back to the airport. After your overnight stay in Johannesburg, an Airport Ushers representative will transfer you along with your fellow travelers back to the Johannesburg airport for your international flight to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Please meet in the lobby of the hotel for the transfer. Airport Ushers Johannesburg phone number is 0027 (0) 82 462 1341.
Your tour includes luggage handling for one main bag per traveler. Upon arrival at each hotel, your bag will be delivered to your room and collected for departure. You’ll be responsible for handling your luggage during airport arrivals and transfers, so pack what you can comfortably manage.
While airlines may allow more or different luggage restrictions, your tour has specific limits to ensure everything fits safely and efficiently on the motor coach. Most airlines, including domestic carriers now charge fees for checked bags, so be sure to check your airline’s baggage policy before departure.
To help ensure a smooth and comfortable experience, please follow the luggage guidelines below.
What You Can Bring:
Main Luggage: Limit 1 per traveler; similar in size to a standard airline-checked suitcase; maximum weight 50 lb / 23 kg.
Hand Luggage: A small, soft-sided bag to bring with you during daily sightseeing and transfers – a backpack is the most practical option. Tour vehicles have limited space under the seats and narrow storage space overhead, therefore hard-sided roller carry-ons are not suitable for this purpose.
Small Personal Items: Small items worn on your person (e.g., purse, belt bag).
Medical Devices: Essential medical items such as CPAP machines do not count toward your luggage allowance
Please Note: If space is tight, non-compliant bags may need to be stored separately or left behind. Please pack conservatively. While these guidelines are designed to ensure a smooth journey, we recommend avoiding maximum limits to prevent issues with vehicle space or handling. If you bring more than what is allowed on tour, you will likely need to store excess luggage at your own expense.
Internal Flight Luggage Note: This tour includes internal flights, which have stricter size and weight limits than your international carrier. For reference, Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) allows:
One carry-on bag: max 15.5 lbs (7 kg), 21 in x 14 in x 8 in (55 x 35 x 20 cm)
One slim item (handbag or laptop bag): max 16 in x 12 in x 6 in (40 x 30 x 15 cm)
Our tour guidelines are more restrictive than ACSA due to space and group logistics. If you follow our packing recommendations, you’ll be well within these limits.
Luggage Protection: We cannot accept claims for loss or damage due to breakage, theft, or normal wear and tear from hotel, airline, or group carrier handling. Use a TSA-approved lock and consider travel insurance. Our “No Worries Travel Protection” offers coverage for luggage incidents. See your policy for details.
Label your bags clearly: It’s important that all your bags are clearly labeled, even if you don’t plan to check them. This helps ensure lost or misplaced items can be returned quickly whether at the airport, hotel, or during sightseeing. We’ve included a durable luggage tag (not the paper one) with your documents. If you don’t already have one, please use it on the bag you plan to check. Your Tour Manager will explain how to use the paper luggage tag upon arrival.
It is recommended to bring an empty reusable water bottle to refill on the other side of security.
Travelers flying to the United States from all international destinations will require extra screening when carrying powdered products weighing 12 oz/ 350 ml or more in carry-on luggage for security reasons. This added security measure will apply to all powders, with the exception of baby formula and medications. For your convenience, please consider packing any non-essential powders in your checked bag. Items that cannot be verified by a TSA officer risk being confiscated. Please visit www.tsa.gov for more information.
It is highly recommended to bring mosquito spray that contains up to 30 percent DEET.
As you prepare to explore South Africa, Zimbabwe and Botswana, enjoy a casual dress and be prepared to experience a range of climates and temperatures.
Opt for casual, breathable fabrics such as cotton or moisture-wicking materials, and bring a mix of short- and long-sleeved shirts for sun protection and comfort. Layering is essential, as temperatures can change throughout the day. A hat and sunscreen are highly recommended to shield against the sun. Ensure you check the temperature guide at the end of this booklet to see what type of temperatures you can expect whilst you are travelling.
For summer travel, lightweight clothing is best, along with convertible pants that can easily be adjusted for different conditions. In winter, layering is especially crucial, starting with thermal tops, adding fleece or wool sweaters, and finishing with an insulated jacket. Neutral tones like khaki, olive green, and brown help blend into the surroundings and minimize insect attraction. Gloves and a scarf may be useful for early morning game drives and chilly evenings.
Comfortable walking shoes are a must, particularly for game drives and safaris
While there are no set rules on the type or color of clothes to wear on safari, however neutral colors are the most common and accepted. It helps to blend in with the dust and the brush so as not to disturb the animals.
During your visit to Victoria Falls, a light rain jacket and waterproof shoes will be useful, as the mist from the falls can be heavy when walking through the rainforest and at the lookouts.
If you take prescription medication, make sure to bring enough for your entire tour plus a few additional days in the original prescription containers.
Medication should be packed in your carry-on bag, never your checked luggage; this is in case your luggage is delayed. You don’t want to be without your medication. You could also bring extra medication in a separate bag in case any gets lost.
In general, we recommend not packing anything of value in your checked bag.
You’ll want to take pictures of everything, so make sure to bring a camera as well as extra memory cards and batteries for your entire trip. If you decide to bring a video camera, don’t forget an extra battery for it plus a charger. Be sure to pack chargers and cords for all your electronic equipment.
It’s also a good idea to bring a travel alarm clock, a travel sewing kit, a portable scale to weigh luggage, and some hand sanitizer for when soap and water aren’t readily available. You might want to bring a washcloth or two as not all hotels provide them.
If you are travelling with a companion, we suggest dividing the contents of your suitcase with them, that way if one bag is delayed, some of your belongings are still available to you both.
If that is not an option for you, you could put a change of clothing in your carry-on if there’s room. That will give you something to wear if your checked luggage is delayed as well.
Last but certainly not least, leave room! You’ll need it to fit all the souvenirs you want to bring home.
When traveling to another country, you may need an adaptor and/or electric converter to plug your electrical devices and appliances into the local
power grid. An adaptor changes the plug so it fits into the outlet. A converter changes the voltage coming out of the outlet. To determine what you need, first verify if the plugs on your devices fit the outlet of your destination.
In South Africa, the plug types are C, M, & N. Plug type C is the plug that has two round pins, and plug types M and N both have three round pins.
In Botswana and Zimbabwe, the plug types used are M & G. Plug type M has three round pins and plug type G has a three pin rectangular blade plug.
If your plugs do not match this description, you will need an adaptor.
Next, verify the voltage of each device you intend to bring. You can find this information on the cord, plug, or on the device itself. Many devices are dual voltage. For those, you do not need a converter. If your device is not dual voltage and it differs from the voltage of your destination, you will need a voltage converter.
In South Africa, the voltage is 220/230.
In Botswana, the voltage is 220 240.
In Zimbabwe, the voltage is 220.
If necessary, make sure to get a converter that converts to this voltage. If you plan to bring a sleep apnea machine, please remember to bring an extension cord along with the adaptor and voltage converter.
Please note, an adequate power supply overnight may not be guaranteed at Iganyana Tented Camp in Hwange National Park and on the Lake Kariba Safari Boat due to the use of solar power. We recommend that you bring a battery pack for your sleep apnea machine.
Your personal bank card may work at local ATM machines in the destination you are traveling to and would dispense local currency. Please contact your bank to determine if this option is available, that your PIN number will be accepted, to inform them that you are traveling, and to determine if any charges apply for each transaction.
You may exchange your money at airports, banks, and exchange bureaus. Most hotels in South Africa do not offer foreign exchange. In most cases, a commission charge will be assessed to exchange your money. The city generally offers a better currency exchange rate than airports.
We recommend carrying only a few major credit cards. Credit card purchases often provide an extra guarantee on your purchase (check with your specific credit card company for details and fees). It is advisable to contact any credit card company you intend utilizing while on tour before you depart to notify them where you will be traveling, to avoid any rejection of services.
The local currency of South Africa is the South African Rand (ZAR). The US Dollar is not widely accepted in South Africa.
The local currency of Zimbabwe is the Zimbabwe Gold, but both local currency and US Dollars are currently used and you should check which currency is being quoted before payment. Zimbabwe’s economic situation remains unpredictable, and the currency accepted may change without notice. Zimbabwe is also experiencing a cash crisis. There is a shortage of physical cash, so it is not always possible to make cash withdrawals using an international bank card.
The local currency of Botswana is the Botswanan Pule (BWP). However, the US Dollar is widely accepted at lodges and hotels.
Local currency may be needed for lunches, gratuities, small items such as postcards and postage, and for shopping in the markets.
Foreign credit cards continue to be accepted at hotels, shops, and restaurants. Foreign exchange rates may apply. For tipping, US Dollars are acceptable, and we advise all our travelers to carry smaller denominations, as change is not always available.
If optional tours are made available to purchase, please note that credit cards must have an expiration date of greater than 30 days from the start of the tour.
Tipping is a great way to show your appreciation for the people who help keep your tour running smoothly. Tipping is discretionary and should be on an individual basis.
Gratuities for hotel housekeeping staff, local sightseeing guides, transfer drivers, on-tour motor coach drivers, and your Tour Manager are not included in the price of your tour.
The suggestions below are provided in US Dollars to help you budget for your trip. Plan to convert the total US Dollar amounts into the equivalent local currency, which is generally the preferred option when giving.
Tour Manager: equivalent of $12 US Dollars per person for each travel day, given at the end of your tour. For this 14-day tour, this would amount to $168 US Dollars total per person.
Game Viewing-Guide: equivalent of $3 US dollars for a half day game drive, walk or cruise, or $6 US dollars for a full day game drive. There are 12 half day game viewing experiences, and 1 full day game drive.
On-Tour Motor Coach Driver: equivalent of $7 US Dollars per person for each travel day, provided at the end of your tour or time with your driver.
Hotel Housekeeping: equivalent of $1 US Dollar per day, per room, left each morning.
Cruise Personnel: equivalent of $10 US Dollars per person for each cruise day to be shared amongst the staff. During this trip you will spend 3 nights on board a Safari Boat on Lake Kariba. A tip box is located on the boat for you to deposit your gratuities.
Airport Transfer Driver: If your airport transfer is included in your package or purchased from Collette, gratuities might already be included. Please reference the transfer information section for confirmation. If gratuities are not mentioned, the suggested amount is typically $3 US Dollars (or equivalent in local currency) per person.
Here is a list of entities we recommend you contact before you depart on your tour:
1.) Your cell phone/mobile carrier if you are planning on using your device. You will want to confirm you will have access in the area(s) you will visit and inquire about any charges you may incur.
2.) Your credit card company for any card(s) you plan to use. Make sure the card company knows when and where you will be traveling to avoid any charges being declined.
3.) Your bank, so you can use your ATM/debit card worry-free. If you are travelling to another country, your bank will be able to tell you if your card will work at the ATM machines to dispense local currency, including if your PIN will be accepted. Also, indicate if you plan to use your debit card as a credit card if your card has that option. Your bank will advise you of any charges for each transaction as well.
Leave a copy of your itinerary, hotel list (included in your tour documents bundle) and a contact number with a designated person in case an emergency comes up while you’re away and someone needs to reach you.
We recommend you leave a copy of your passport at home in a secure location and bring an additional copy with you as a precaution.
During your flight, make sure to stand up and walk around as much as possible, and drink plenty of water. These simple suggestions will help you stay comfortable, particularly during long flights.

Our trip was planned perfectly, down to each transfer ride, restaurant reviews/reservations, and side trips to downtown Cabo. Joan arranged everything and all we did was show up to enjoy the week of relaxation! It was a pleasure working with the ultimate professional that heard all of our detailed needs and handled them all.
Joan is so easy to work with and answers all of your questions. She is a gem.
I’ve worked with Joan on several vacations. She’s made each trip better than it would have been otherwise. Twice I’ve traveled with her: I’ve seen how even when she’s on vacation, she takes a portion of each day to catch up on her emails and obligations to her customers. She is a consummate professional. She will never leave you hanging. She will include thoughtful extras, be they power converters before the trip, or maybe lounge passes at the airport. Most importantly, when someone is supposed to pick you up, or when the hotel is supposed to have your upgrade, you can trust Joan has it handled.
I’m always happy and more than satisfied with Joan Qualls when planning my trips! She always goes the extra mile to make sure my trip is a fun and a wonderful experience! As an example, Joan was up in the middle of the night to secure the precious Anne Frank House tickets in Amsterdam before they sold out on the website and that’s just one example of many!
Joan is so easy to work with and answers all of your questions. She is a gem.
She was excellent. Always asked lots of questions to determine what best would fit our needs. We worked with her on a previous trip to Italy and it was the trip of a lifetime. Well, this trip was equally fun, exciting, educational and fulfilling. She directed us to a list of day trips. We found 3 trips that interested us. She recommended how to set the days up so we wouldn’t be exhausted with too much scheduled in a row. Then a week before we were to leave, we received an email advising us that our day trip to Paris was cancelled! Joan reached out to the tour organizer and managed to swap days with a different tour on a different day through the same operator. Disaster averted! We would recommend Joan Qualls to anyone planning a trip. She knows a lot about cool activities in the countries where you are traveling. And if she doesn’t, she’ll look into it and give you sound advice.
Fabulous! This trip was top notch from beginning to end. The airline and flight that Joan recommended and booked for us were very accommodating. We needed wheelchair service at the airports which she arranged. Joan helped arrange this trip for us ,based on her personal experience there, which is priceless. She is very attentive to one’s wants and needs from beginning to end. Thank you, Joan
